Longest and Shortest Reigning Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir
Srinagar, September 23, 2024 – As Jammu and Kashmir gear up for the upcoming Assembly elections, a look back at the region’s political history reveals the longest and shortest tenures of its Chief Ministers. This retrospective provides insight into the leadership dynamics that have shaped the region over the decades.
Longest Reigning Chief Minister: Sheikh Abdullah
Sheikh Abdullah, fondly known as the “Lion of Kashmir,” holds the record for the longest tenure as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Serving from 1947 to 1953 and then again from 1975 to 1982, Abdullah’s leadership spanned significant periods of political and social change. His tenure was marked by efforts to integrate Jammu and Kashmir more closely with India while also addressing local aspirations for autonomy.
Shortest Reigning Chief Minister: Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq
On the other end of the spectrum, Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq’s tenure as Chief Minister was notably brief. Sadiq served from 1964 to 1967, a period characterized by political turbulence and transition. Despite his short stint, Sadiq’s leadership was pivotal in navigating the region through a complex political landscape.
